Happy New Year!
On this great Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God, we turn again to the Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy. Following yesterday’s introduction to Chapter II, today’s reading looks at some ways to make the liturgy “pastorally efficacious to the fullest degree” (article 49).
The Council calls for simplification to increase understanding by discarding any excess and restoring anything that was lost (article 50). We hear a little more specificity about the Lectionary spanning multiple years (article 51) and about the importance of the homily (article 52).
Article 53 asks for a restoration of the “prayer of the faithful” and gives a snapshot of the bullet points we still pray for every day. Article 54 again talks about celebrating Mass in the vernacular, though it still encourages that people ought to be taught parts of the Ordinary” in Latin.
