Today we begin Chapter 2 of Part I in the Pastoral Constitution on the Church in the Modern World. The topic: The Community of Mankind.
Article 23 sets up the chapter by calling to mind the importance of our interpersonal relationships with each other. Modern technology makes our dependence upon each other even more readily apparent, but our relationships with each other are what are most significant.
Article 24 speaks on the human race in familial terms and the inseparability of the commands to love God and our neighbor. It concludes with another phrase John Paul II was fond of quoting:
This likeness reveals that man, who is the only creature on earth which God willed for itself, cannot fully find himself except through a sincere gift of himself.
