“Man comes to a true and full humanity only through culture, that is through the cultivation of the goods and values of nature. Wherever human life is involved, therefore, nature and culture are quite intimately connected one with the other.”
So begins our reading from the Pastoral Constitution on the Church in the Modern World as we move to Part II, Chapter 2: “The Proper Development of Culture”.
Chapter 2 is divided into three sections; 1) The Circumstances of Culture in the World Today; 2) Some Principles for the Proper Development of Culture; and 3) Some More Urgent Duties of Christians in Regard to Culture.
In today’s reading, article 53 introduces the chapter as a whole. and defines what the Council means by “culture”.
