Today in the Pastoral Constitution on the Church in the Modern World, we continue our look at “The Avoidance of War.”
Article 81 takes a critical look at the “arms race” as a means for countries to keep the peace and deter war. The Council goes so far as to say that “the arms race is an utterly treacherous trap for humanity, and one which ensnares the poor to an intolerable degree” (article 81). The better solution is to reform attitudes and establish a “mutual trust” between nations.
