After recently looking at documents on priests and the laity, today we begin the Decree on the Adaptation and Renewal of Religious Life, known by its Latin title of Perfectae Caritatis, which means “perfect charity”.
Article 1 introduces the document with reference to the “evangelical councils” — the hallmark of religious life including poverty, chastity and obedience. The first paragraph alludes to the Council’s previous treatment of this topic in Chapter VI of Lumen Gentium.
This passage further indicates the primary purpose of the document, which is the renewal of religious life. The Council Fathers emphasize that they only intend to lay down guiding principles and that the particular charisms of various religious orders are to be respected in implementing what is to come in the remainder of the document.
