Today we continue in the Decree Concerning the Pastoral Office of Bishops in the Church by beginning the first of the document’s three chapters. Chapter I addresses “The Relationship of Bishops to the Universal Church.”
Part 1 of Chapter I addresses “The Role of Bishops in the Universal Church.” Article 4 heavily references Lumen Gentium to draw the image of the bishops as all being “members of the episcopal body” with the pope as the head. This language emphasizes the point that the bishops are not a group of disconnected individuals doing their own thing but rather a unified body.
Article 5 makes reference to how this collegiality will be manifested going forward: in Synods of Bishops.
