Today in the Decree Concerning the Pastoral Office of Bishops in the Church, we continue our look at diocesan bishops.
Here the Council Fathers once again weave the theme of priest, prophet and king into the conciliar documents. We have looked at the bishop’s role as prophet (articles 12-14) and priest (article 15). In article 16, we look at the bishop’s role as “king.” This passage does not use that term but rather refers to the bishop being a “father and pastor” — someone who leads by serving those in his care: priests, laity, and non-Catholics.
