In today’s reading from the Decree Concerning the Pastoral Office of Bishops in the Church, we complete section one on diocesan bishops from the document’s second chapter.
Article 19 touches on the relationship of the bishop with civil authority. Article 20 speaks of the desire to eliminate situations where the civil authority had customarily been involved in the process of selecting bishops. Article 21 concludes the section by calling upon diocesan bishops to tender their resignation at the appropriate time with the knowledge that they will be provided for even in retirement.
