Today we complete our reading of the Decree on the Ministry and Life of Priests with the “Conclusion and Exhortation.”

The Council Fathers conclude the document on priests with an acknowledgement of the many challenges posed by the modern world and an affirmation for priests that they are never alone.

Today in the Decree on the Ministry and Life of Priests, we continue our look at “Aids to the Life of Priests.”

Article 19 highlights pastoral studies as an aid to living the priestly life.  As such, the Council recommends establishing  more avenues for priests to “effectively learn the methods of evangelization.”

In article 18, we look at the aids available for priests to grow in their spiritual life.  The aids pretty well mirror the ministries described in artilces 4-6: Scripture and the Eucharist.

Day #244: Presbyterorum Ordinis 17

In today’s reading from the Decree on the Ministry and Life of Priests, we finishe section 2 of Chapter III on “Special Spiritual Requirements in the Life of a Priest.”

We already looked at the evangelical counsel of obedience (article 15) and chastity (article 16).  In article 17, we turn our attention to poverty.  More than just an absence of possessions, poverty entails thanking God for the created world and used His created gifts for their designated purpose.

In today’s reading from the Decree on the Ministry and Life of Priests, we continue to look at “Special Spiritual Requirements in the Life of a Priest.”

We began yesterday with a look at obedience (article 15).  Today we move to the next evangelical counsel of chastity, which for priests generally means celibacy.  If you’re looking for a nice summary of why the Church maintains celibacy as the rule for priests of the Latin rite, this is the paragraph to read.
