In today’s reading from the Decree on the Ministry and Life of Priests, we begin Chapter III’s section 2 on “Special Spiritual Requirements in the Life of a Priest.”

Day #241: Presbyterorum Ordinis 14

Today in the Decree on the Ministry and Life of Priests, we finish the section in Chapter III on “the vocation of priests to the life of perfection.”

Article 14 closes out the section with the reminder that the priest must ultimately follow Christ’s example and strive to do the will of God.  Burnout is always a danger and simply doing the external acts will not be enough for priests to grow in holiness.  They must always seek to do the will of God.

21. Cf. Jn 4:34.

22. Cf. 1 Jn 3:16.

23. “May it be a duty of love to feed the Lord’s flock” (St. Augustine, Tract on John, 123, 5: PL 35, 1967).

Today in the Decree on the Ministry and Life of Priests, we continue our look at “the vocation of priests to the life of perfection.”

Day #239: Presbyterorum Ordinis 12

Today in the Decree on the Ministry and Life of Priests, we begin chapter III on “The Life of Priests.”

As with Chapter II, this chapter is also divided into three sections.  Article 12 starts off the first section on “The Vocation of Priests to the Life of Perfection.”  Priests are “living instruments of Christ” and this is how they live out Jesus’ command to all of us “be perfect.”  Priests especially need to be open to the Holy Spirit and they work best as Christ’s instruments when they are growing in holiness.

Day #238: Presbyterorum Ordinis 11

Once again we look to the Decree on the Ministry and Life of Priests.  Today we wrap up Chapter II on the Ministry of priests.

Article 11 finishes off section 3 of this chapter with a look at fostering vocations to the priesthood and how the responsibility for this is shared by all of us.

Here is the Scripture citation:

Day #237: Presbyterorum Ordinis 10

Once again we look to the Decree on the Ministry and Life of Priests.  Today’s reading in the chapter on the Ministry of priests starts off the final section of that chapter which covers “The Distribution of Priests, and Vocations to the Priesthood.”

As the mission of priests in conceived broadly as being for the whole Church,  priests ought to go where they are most needed irrespective of culture and nationality.  Towards this end, article 10 makes some practical recommendations to facilitate this by calling for a revision of the rules regarding incardination and excardination and even the establishment of international seminaries.

Here are the Scripture citations:

Acts 1:8

1 Cor 9:19-20

And the footnotes:

59. Cf. Heb 7:3.

60. Cf. Lk 10:1.

Day #236: Presbyterorum Ordinis 9

Today in the Decree on the Ministry and Life of Priests, we conclude our reflection on priests’ relationships with others.

In the past few days, we have looked at priests’ relationship with their bishop (article 7) and each other (article 8).  Article 9 looks at priests’ relationship with the laity.  This is a very insightful passage for the us laity to be familiar with.

The article ends with a brief acknowledgment of those non-Catholic Christians and even non-Christians.
